Their Story

 

We are a coffee roaster and espresso specialist, originally founded in 1986 in New Zealand when Michael Allpress decided to chase his love of traditional Italian espresso rather than his career as a chef. He built a coffee cart and began serving the largely unfamiliar espresso drinks in a local Auckland market. Very quickly, his obsession with flavour led him to source his own beans and begin roasting coffee.

 

This fresh approach to flavour quickly generated interest from cafes and restaurants across the country and Michaels focus shifted from cart operator to speciality coffee roaster. From these early days, Allpress has gradually grown under the leadership of Michael and our team of talented, passionate and friendly individuals, with a culture that has always been down to earth and strong on values and relationships.

 

Venturing beyond NZ into Australia in 2000 was an ambitious move, but in partnership with lifelong friend and well-known Sydney restaurateur, Tony Papas the expansion across the Tasman developed with a like minded Allpress approach and group of people.

 

By 2010, the knowledge and skills learned from so many years involvement in the cafe industry down-under, motivated us to take on a tougher challenge - taking Allpress to the UK. Tony Papas made the move to London and with a skilled team, that included Auckland & Sydney roastery staff, opened the Shoreditch Roastery & Cafe in East London. Ever since, they have successfully been raising the awareness for great tasting coffee amongst local coffee drinkers and cafe owners.

 

Contemplation to enter a new market is a well considered and researched process for Michael and Tony. So after a few years watching Tokyo's emerging espresso coffee culture, the fit for Allpress felt right. Our long time customer since 1999, Teru Harase, is now back in his hometown Tokyo establishing Allpress Japan with multi-talented Allpress NZ veteran, Russell Tearle alongside.

 

With our geographies widening, the foundations of Allpress are kept close. Allpress people remain dedicated to producing the best coffee and providing friendly, knowledgable service. There is a deep sense of familiarity and culture nutured amongst staff. Several members of the team have been with us for more than 16 years and there is now a fantastic migration of experienced people between our roasterys in Auckland, Dunedin, Sydney, Melbourne and London, that keeps each territory true to the character of our humble beginnings.
